It always surprises me how many people do not “get” the ideological war that is taking place in the US, and has been since at least the New Deal. They don’t understand the differences between Repubilcans and Democrats. As a result they are baffled and annoyed by “partisanship,” and see it as just small-minded bickering and jockeying for power and television time. In fact it is a grand struggle over the direction of our country, and especially the role of government: more or less welfare and social programs; more or less government regulation to protect the environment, interfere in relationships between the strong and the weak, and ameliorate the bad effects of human stupidity.
If I were head of the Democratic Party, I would launch a “party branding” ad campaign to stress those very real differences. We’re for the ordinary person, they’re for the rich. So many people are just plumb confused over the differences between the parties – and if they understood a little more clearly, the Democrats would have the advantage. I’ve never understood why the Dems don’t do that. Perhaps it’s all those fat-cat donors they must suck up to.
